The Wild Beauty of the Coast to Coast Path

Straits of Riggindale and High Street, Patterdale

Straits of Riggindale and High Street, Patterdale

High Street is a spectacular ridge top walk that is also a hub to many other ridge top walks extending to Hawswater (via Kidsty Pike), Hawswater (via Riggindale Crag), Harter Fell (via Mardale III Bell), Sallows (via III Bell) and Hartsop Dodd (via Stony Cove Pike). High Street rises above and between Hayeswater and Blea Water. It forms a wide ridge top touched by the Coast to Coast path where it meets the Straits of Riggindale south of The Knott, en route from Patterdale to Hawswater.

The summit cairn, at 828 metres is known as Racecourse Hill, and the eastern rim plummets very steeply into Blea Water. The Coast to Coast walk follows High Street for a short distance, along the section known as the Straits of Riggindale, and then angles acutely back upon itself to follow the ridge top along Rampsgill Head, over Kidsty Pike and to Kidsty Howes, where it descends to The Rigg.
