The Wild Beauty of the Coast to Coast Path

Severals Prehistoric Village, Smardale, Coast to Coast Walk

Severals Prehistoric Village, Smardale, Coast to Coast

Severals is the name given to the southernmost of the three prehistoric villages on Begin Hill above the Smardale Valley (the others are Intake and Intake II). The village is about 3 acres, irregular in dimension, and consisting of huts and cattle enclosures. Little of it is now visible but its outline can clearly be seen from the air.

The Coast to Coast path bisects these villages, passing between Severals and Intake, as it crosses over the summit of Begin Hill en route to Smardale. The photograph below, taken from the Coast to Coast path on the descent of Begin Hill shows the Smardale Vllley below, and Scandel Beck wending away in the distance towards its source beyond Ravenstonedale. On the right of the photograph is the upper part of Severals, which was built on the south side of the hill as it descends to what is now the dismantled railway, just above Severals Gill and Smardale Beck.
