Blakeley Moss Stone Circle - Ennerdale - Coast to Coast path

Blakeley Moss Stone Circle, Ennerdale

Blakeley Moss Stone Circle, Ennerdale, is a small Bronze Age stone circle also known as Blakeley Raise Stone Circle and Kinniside Circle. The circle consists of eleven standing stones, spread in a circle whose circumference is about 15 metres wide.

The circle is found on Scarny Brow, between Nannycatch Beck and Ennerdale Bridge. This important landmark will be well known to Coast to Coast walkers, as the Coast to Coast path follows Scarny Brow after leaving Nannycatch Valley.

Blakeley Moss Stone Circle is not in its original state, having been restored in 1925 by a working party who cleaned out the stone sockets. They located the eleven stones, some of which had been used by a local farmer as gate posts, and restored the site precisely as it was during the Bronze Age, setting them in concrete to preserve the circle for future generations.

The area around here is hauntingly mysterious, often shrouded in mist, and overlooking the deep Nannycatch Valley below. Flat Fell is almost opposite, on the far side of Nannycatch, displaying its huge flat plateau and very steep valley walls.

Another name for the Blakeley Moss stone circle is Blakeley Raise, named after the summit top of Blakeley, upon whose lower western flank it lies. The Coast to Coast path follows Scarny Brow, a narrow moorland road that cuts through the lower part of Blakeley Raise, right to the side of the stone circle.
