Jenny Bradley Cross

The Jenny Bradley Cross is an ancient wayside cross located on Greenhow Moor on the old packhorse way close to Bloworth Crossing. It is accompanied by a larger Faversham Estate boundary stone with an inscribed date of 1888.

The cross has its head and part of its shaft missing. The old packhorse way runs south from Baysdale Abbey to Ryedale. Crosses and boundary stones are numerous in this area. This one is sufficiently close to the Coast to Coast path as to warrant a small diversion. It is less than 1/2 a mile away, and the path to it is well made.

Wayside crosses are types of Christian crosses dating between the 9th and 15 centuries AD. Such crosses were multi-functional in that they:
  • reminded walkers of the Christian faith
  • were waymarkers
  • were pathway guides in adverse weather and terrain
  • reassured walkers they were not lost.
