Bolton-on-Swale Nature Reserve - Coast to Coast walk

Bolton-on-Swale Nature Reserve

Coast to Coast

There are many sand and gravel quarrying sites around Bolton-on-Swale, on the river's flood plains. The Bolton-0n-Swale Lake Nature Reserve is just off the route of the Coast to Coast footpath, but well worth the small diversion to see it. The footpath leaves the River Swale and the quarrying pits at Flat Lane and passes into Bolton-on-Swale village. Instead of turning at Flat Lane you should continue along Back Lane for only 1/4 mile to reach the Nature Reserve. It is, in fact, on the opposite shore to Catterick.

This is one of the few large areas of open water in this stretch of North Yorkshire, and is a magnet to a wide ambit of wintering and breeding waders and wildfowl. The lake was once a sand and gravel quarry, although quarrying this lake was spent some time ago. It has now been landscaped to provide a suitable habitat for many species of wetland birds..

Bolton-on-Swale Nature Reserve
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust are the owners of the Reserve, having purchased some of the gravel pits in 1985 and other pits between 1985 to 1993. The Reserve has recently been improved by the creation of a footpath (constructed from recycled plastic board made by a Yorkshire community enterprise) that leads to a wildlife viewing shelter. As a result of the new path being created accessibility and visitors to the Reserve has increased enormously.

Bird Wildlife

Some of the birds frequenting the reserve are little ringed plovers, wigeon, whooper swans, lapwings, oyster catchers, curlews, glaucous gulls and yellow wagtails. Other wildlife visitors to the Reserve include common sandpipers, little stints, ruffs, whimbrels, merlins, pink-footed geese and several species of tern.
