East Gill Force, Keld, Coast to Coast
East Gill Force
The waterfall is on the East Gill, only 20 or so yards from where the gill flows in the River Swale, having journeyed from high up on the East Stonesdale Moor.
East Gill Force is approached from a smooth gravel track from Keld, which winds down to the River Swale where a footbridge crosses the river near to the waterfall. This is a popular area for picnickers due to the flat expanse of grassy verge to the side of the falls.
In wet weather the water in the gill surges over the falls and roars along East Gill, spilling wildly into the River Swale not many yards distant. It pales, though, in comparison to the nearby Kisdon Force, just a few hundred metres further along the Swale. Sadly, however, Kisdon Force is not visible from the Coast to Coast path being hidden by dense undergrowth and the steep cliffs below the path.
