Old Gang Mines, Melbecks Moor, Coast to Coast
These redundant mills are some of the best preserved in the Yorkshire Dales, and the photographs below attest to their heritage.
All around these moors are signs of former quarrying activities, ruined buildings, mining roads, adits, shafts and mining tools. The Old Gang Mining complex on Melbecks Moor and Reeth High Moor is an ancient scheduled monument, as a wooden plaque on one of its building walls declares.
The mills and other mining artefacts continue down the track towards Healaugh, following the Old Gang Beck, at least as far as Novel Houses Hill, just past Surrender Bridge.
