The Wild Beauty of the Coast to Coast Path

Old Gang Mines, Melbecks Moor, Coast to Coast

Old Gang Mines, Melbecks Moor, Coast to Coast

The modern route of the Coast to Coast path follows the high route from Keld passing over Gunnerside Moor and Mebecks Moor. Once upon Gunnerside Moor the path joins an old mining track, very wide, stoney and easy to follow. Melbecks Moor is divided from Reeth High Moor by the Old Gang Beck, also known as Mill Gill. On each side of Old Gang Beck is a series of disused mining works, buildings and rusting assets. Walking through this area is akin to walking through a mining museum, there is so much to see.

These redundant mills are some of the best preserved in the Yorkshire Dales, and the photographs below attest to their heritage.

All around these moors are signs of former quarrying activities, ruined buildings, mining roads, adits, shafts and mining tools. The Old Gang Mining complex on Melbecks Moor and Reeth High Moor is an ancient scheduled monument, as a wooden plaque on one of its building walls declares.

The mills and other mining artefacts continue down the track towards Healaugh, following the Old Gang Beck, at least as far as Novel Houses Hill, just past
Surrender Bridge.
