Surrender Bridge, Swaledale, Coast to Coast
Surrender Bridge crosses the Old Gang Beck (or Mill Gill) on the Coast to Coast path beside Healaugh Side on Reeth High Moor, near the village Healaugh on the River Swale. It is an aged single span, single lane stone bridge.
The Coast to Coast path intersects the Surrender Road, just a few dozen yards from the bridge, and it is a delightsome, if not nostalgic picture near the end of a long day's walk from Keld, through the Old Gang mining area. I say nostalgic, because having seen so many episodes of the well known TV series "All Creatures Great and Small", featuring the notable country vet, James Herriot, I almost felt that I lived in this area.
I was unprepared to see the bridge, having no idea of its existence here, but was well acquainted with its image, having seen it at in the opening scenes of each episode, and seemingly from the same viewpoint from where I took this photograph.
North of the bridge is Great Pinseat, a peak at 583 metres high and Little Pinseat, with many mining shafts surrounding them on Surrender Ground. There are countless disused mines and mine shafts in this area, all the way up to Arkengarthdale, quite apart from the Old Gang Mines.
