The Wild Beauty of the Coast to Coast Path

Nuns Steps, Steps Wood, Swaledale, Coast to Coast path

Nuns Steps, Steps Wood, Swaledale, Coast to Coast

The medieval Nuns' Steps in Steps Wood, known as the Nuns' Causey, only a stone's throw from the River Swale, are part of the Coast to Coast walk from Marrick Abbey to the hamlet of Marrick. The large, well worn, paved steps rise from the gated entrance of the wood and proceed diagonally from the gate to the opposite top corner of the wood for a distance of a quarter mile. At the top of the steps the woods are left to cross fields into Marrick.

The steps were used by the benedictine nuns to commute between Marrick Priory to the the village of Marske, some 3 miles away and Richmond, 8 miles away, for supplies.
